Think about it. Rome was an empire. There was one supreme leader, the emperor (aka President Snow). Rome began with city states, each having a ruler below the emperor to make sure everything was going smoothly and to prevent rebellion (aka the districts). If rebellion did occur, the rebels were annihilated by the government with little to no thought about it (District 13). The districts were populated primarily by “plebeians” or common people whose lives were dictated by the top 1% or the “patricians” that lived in the capital city and had control over the government and other political aspects. The plebs lives were put at stake for the entertainment of the patricians in a fight to the death, hence the metaphorical birth of what we now know as the Hunger Games.
I thought of all of this simply by realizing how many Hunger Games characters had Roman names. I always interpreted the Hunger Games taking place in the future, but this just makes so much more sense??
